For some reason, I decided to go back and check my Animal Crossing DS world, and currently it's snowing in the game. Something else to make my nostalgic for my hometown, and even more weirder out by the fact that I'm sitting here in the middle of January with our windows open and in short sleeves.

Each character is a tragic hero, and yet, they are at their core nothing more than ordinary people thrown into extraordinary situations. Because of this, we can relate to them, progress with them, live the adventure that is Persona through them.
Eleven years ago, I wrote those words as part of the opening to the official GameFan strategy guide for a quirky new RPG brought to the United States by Atlus called Revelations: Persona. It is funny that they would then end up being at their most relevant nearly a decade later at the release of the franchise's third official chapter, Persona 3.
Persona 3 was the game that changed things for me. Truth be told, I hadn't been so happy with the Japanese RPG genre over recent years; a genre I came to love from the 8-bit days of Phantasy Star and Dragon Warrior, and a genre I watched fall into stagnation as generations passed but each new title did little to progress itself over its forefathers. P3 may not have been the phoenix rising from the ashes of outdated ideas and cliches that I longed to see, but it was the game to stand up and challenge us to look at things in a whole new perspective, just as the original Persona had done so long ago.
The first person in Persona 4 to officially join our protagonist in his adventures is a young lad by the name of Yosuke. Like you, Yosuke is originally from the big city, brought to the sleepy Japanese town of Inaba due to his father's managerial position at the recently-opened mega store Junes. (Junes is the Wal-mart of the gaming world: the "evil" big-box retailer who comes in with little concern for the fate of those smaller local stores that have existed for as long as one can remember.) Yosuke's awakening to the power of persona–those inner selves of ours that give us strength beyond what we normally can achieve–doesn't come as it has come before, which typically amounts to a trumpet of fanfare and a "here kid, here's your persona, now go save the world" for good measure. Instead, it comes in a scene where Yosuke is forced to not only face those feelings and emotions he has kept bottled up inside of him, but fight that inner self after initially refusing to acknowledge that other self as his own. This would be the way all of the main characters in P4 (save our protagonist) would be awarded their power, and it's a subtle change that ends up really setting the stage for where the game intends to take you.
I mention this facet of Persona 4 here now because it is key to what I myself had to come to understand, and what those out there who were fans of Persona 3 will have to face in themselves. As excited and enthusiastic as I was going in, an hour or so into P4, I wasn't enjoying it, and that's because the true feeling I had buried in my heart that I refused to accept was that I didn't want to like it better than P3. Had this been a completely new project, different in detail and design from its previous chapter, I could have left those feelings for P3 where they lay, and enjoyed P4 without any of that comparison going on in my mind. The truth is, P4 is indeed, as some have labeled it, "Persona 3.5". It is not a revolutionary project that will leave you with the same feelings of wonder and surprise that you felt with P3 (unless you haven't played P3); it is instead the progression of what was started in that rebirth of the Persona series, and what was built upon in FES.
I had loved Persona 3, and I always will, and that's okay. At some point, though, I had to let it go, and I had to accept Persona 4 for what it was without wanting it to be something it wasn't.
What I can now say with confidence is that while Persona 4 may be a better technical game (in most respects) than Persona 3, what is far more important is that it is a better experience. While there are many reasons for this, the absolute biggest contributor is the strength of the cast we have been given here, a strength nowhere displayed as brilliantly as it is in Chie Satonaka. Chie is quite possibly is one of the best characters ever to come from Atlus, Megami Tensei series or otherwise, and if she doesn't go on to become a fan favorite in the category of female RPG characters, it will be proof that there is no justice in this world. From the moment I met her, I fell in love with Chie as a character–not because the game was trying with all of its might to convince me that I liked her, as P3 struggled to do with Yukari, but because she simply works so amazingly well. She is, at her core, nothing more than your average girl, a person that you could actually bump into one day while browsing VHS tapes of kung-fu movies recorded from Chinese TV on the shelf of some poorly-lit Asian video store somewhere. Chie has no tragic flaw waiting to show itself, no dark secret past soon to surface; she is just a girl who can be strong, but is never invincible; who can be weak, but is never breakable; who can be a dork, but is never dumb. When it came time to decide which I wanted to pursue her as–either a love interest or a close friend, a new option you're given in P4 for the major female characters instead of just automatically trying to get your groove on with all of them–because I had so grown to respect her as a comrade and a friend, and didn't want to cheapen that by feeling forced to switch her over to romance status. (Well, that, and my eye was instead on a certain red-haired ex-idol.)
What Persona 4 does in Chie, and in the entire rest of the cast, is allow the characters to simply be, for lack of a better word, "normal". P3's cast, as much as I loved them, each held in themselves classic stereotypes from the world of Japanese gaming and anime: the goofy slacker, the mature older girl, the cool upperclassman all the students look up to, the shy, frail girl who has trouble fitting in. Those characters, throughout the course of P3, had to be given opportunities to show that there was more to them than just those cookie-cutter positions. The people you'll come to know in P4 aren't tragic heroes pushed into a situation they never wanted to be in, they're down to earth high schoolers who are eager to use their powers to save those around them, yet who are also perfectly capable of forgetting their troubles when the opportunity to have fun arises. In stripping away that desperation of having the entire world balance on their shoulders, these heros and heroines have become far more relatable, and in turn, also more endearing.
It's nice, then, to see that one of the changes made to Persona's current claim to fame, the Social Link system, is an increased importance on those closest to you. As before, your best female friends are more than eager to grow their relationships with you, but now so to are your male teammates. This initially makes the overall head count when it comes to Social Links feel artificially smaller, because a decent chunk of your possible acquaintances are already accounted for. What you find, however, is that your Social Links now have more emotional value to them, and while you'll be spending more time with your close circle of friends because of the benefits they'll gain in combat (which we'll get to in a moment), but also because those are the people you most want to spend time with. Thought a few aspects of the overall social experience don't quite feel as robust as or improved upon thought that were in Persona 3 as they should–outings with friends don't feel as spontaneous, and events like the summer festival or school culture day are still woefully under-developed–there are a greater amount of elements that have either been nicely expanded or are completely new. Stat-boosting situations can now improve your standing with multiple characters at once, and a wide variety of jobs and side tasks now exists when you've got some time on your hands and nothing to do otherwise.
The changes made to Persona 4's social side are by far the biggest differences you'll find when compared to Persona 3, but they certainly aren't the only ones. Tartarus–the 250+ floor dungeon that served as the setting for most of P3's combat-related gameplay–was somewhat of a sticking point for some. P4 goes away from the idea of an all-encompassing location, and instead gives players smaller, much more personalized dungeons based around the personally of the characters you're trying to save at that point. (An idea crafted to brilliance in the game's fourth dungeon.) Coming from the monstrous Tartarus, at first they'll feel positively tiny, but the change in attitude and atmosphere they create is unquestionably positive. Those who enjoyed the dungeon crawling of P3 should still find enough here to be satisfied, but those who found that aspect a chore will no doubt be happy to see that source of exhaustion changed into a more enjoyable experience.
There has also been a restructuring of P3's "Shuffle Chance" system, morphing what previously was an easier-to-track bonus opportunity to gain extra yen, XP, life, or even a new Persona to summon into something that is not only harder to be good at, but gives far less for your efforts this time around. The prizes now are solely Persona-based, and while I do really miss that extra experience I could acquire when I had no use for the Persona selection I had been given, getting your pick from multiple Persona possibilities does help speed up the collection process. Oh, something else helps with that as well: the fact that the moment you get a new Persona, it's automatically added to your compendium–meaning those precious open slots you have for Persona you don't care about keeping on-hand can be used to repeatedly collect and replace ones you don't have yet while actually gaining something from that process. This change alone makes a huge difference, and is a great example of the many ways Persona 4 seemed to really try to be friendlier to the player.
Another of these "let's be nice to the player" changes is the now fabled Square button. I've got to be honest: ask me what Square did in Persona 3, and I couldn't begin to tell you. Here, however, its functions are not only plentiful, but absolutely heavenly. While running around any of the town's areas, Square will bring you up a "quick jump" menu, where you can pick to instantly move to any of the connected local areas, or to other key areas around the city. In combat, Square will give you expanded details about Persona and their abilities, and in menus it'll give further information about whatever you've highlighted at the time. (So, say, you're at the point where you're forced to replace one Persona's ability with another: Square will tell you exactly what is what so that you don't have to remember what the hell that multi-syllabic spell you've never used before actually is.) The problem with Persona 4's Square-button features are that they are so ingrained in the game, and so natural in use, that it's very easy to take those uses for granted, especially if it's been a while since you trekked through the previous chapter. Play Persona 4 for a bit, then go back to Persona 3, and see just how much of a gameplay difference one little button can make.
Much bigger of a shock, surprisingly, was what you'll find new this time around once you've actually encountered a Shadow in said dungeons. Little tweaks to the core elements of battle mean that some previous strategies no longer exist, and the addition of new skills that your teammates can unlock as you progress their Social Links–such as pushing your character out of the way of a mortal blow, or curing another character of a status ailment after a knock-down attack for free–provide an interesting extra layer not only to battle, but the overall feeling of a team working together in itself. And, speaking of teamwork, we get to that bullet-point that rests near the top of any list detailing the changes in Persona 4: the ability to directly control your party members should you decide to. I am, I must say, a bit torn on this one. Some folks out there do not at all like the notion of A.I.-controlled characters in RPGs, and will be happy to know that they can now have full say at all times over their characters in P4. As somebody who very much supports the A.I. teammate route, people like me will find the results mixed: your party members are wonderfully smarter than they were before, but the amount of specific strategies you can have a character follow has been reduced. No doubt the thought is that more specific control should now come from, well, direct control. While not a deal breaker, those like myself who would prefer to not fall back on the direct control crutch will find it near impossible to avoid that temptation in a few of the boss battles.
Does Persona 4 have flaws? It has one serious flaw–or more like a serious concern, which I'll get to in a moment–but beyond the few points I've already mentioned, there are a few more elements that either are areas I wish had been addressed differently, or maybe could have been done better. The game is very unforgiving in the start, and even as somebody who played the hell out of Persona 3, I had a bit of a rough go here at first. With the dungeons shortened, warps out no longer come at regular intervals, and when you do return to the start, you'll find that you don't get a refresh on your HP or SP like you used to. (You will open up a way to do so, but it is prohibitively expensive at first.) Combine this with the fact that dungeons can only be explored during precious blocks of daytime, mix in a couple of first bosses that have absolutely no mercy on the player, and I can foresee those that aren't veterans of P3 feeling very overwhelmed by the game very quickly.
I also feel sorry for anybody who stressed over the time structure system in Persona 3, because to be honest, I felt a bigger sense of pressure in what I was doing with my time in Persona 4. Having to choose if you want to either build up a Social Link or go do some dungeon crawling is bad enough, but the concern is compounded now that you no longer have a set lunar schedule to follow. Do-or-die dates are now based upon the weather, and with only a seven-day outlook to go by, you're always under the concern over if you're going to be strong enough or not whenever the next big challenge arrives. I both liked and disliked these changes: the lack of certainty over when things were going to happen was more exciting, but the pressure of being more careful with my time meant that I neglected some Social Links that I really wish I had felt okay with fleshing out more.
So what about that serious point of concern with Persona 4 that I mentioned before? It is something that I, in my infinite wisdom, predicted back in my review for Persona 3:
If Persona 3 has one major flaw, it is the point at which the harsh realization sets in that this game is too ambitious for its own good... As heartbroken as I may be, I can't blame Persona 3 for not being more than it set out to be, because it took a lot of chances and really pulled off everything it attempted. Instead, I blame the game for now making me want a Persona 4 that would probably be financially (and logistically) impossible for Atlus to produce.
Persona 4 is absolutely, unquestionably an amazing game. When nostalgia is put aside and it is compared to Persona 3, P4 is truly the better game, and taking into account that I consider P3 to be one of the best PS2 titles ever to see release, that's saying something. And yet, even as much as I came to embrace the game once I opened my heart to it, I just couldn't help but feel like I wasn't fully satisfied. With P3, I expected nothing, and ended up with more than I could have imagined. With P4, I knew what I wanted, and when the meal was finished, I was left hungry. What has been crafted here is quality from beginning to end, but the can–no, must–be more. The player's interaction with the characters in the game must be richer, as too must the situations we are presented, and if any one element of P4 disappointed me in relation to what I expected from it, it was this. I don't want to watch my character having fun at a class outing via a few lines of text, I want to have that fun myself. I don't want to wait to pre-set days in order to deepen my relationships with people, I want to use the cell phone my character always has at hand to call them up and invite them out. I don't want to just have my character go to the sports club and automatically get a stat update, I want at least a little mini game or something where I have to earn that update myself (as well as feel like I'm actually participating in the club). I want my character to find love that actually results in a relationship, not just a blushing character pic and a few slightly different final events. (I'd also, by the way, like to help those teammates who aren't part of such dating situation find love themselves.) These were things that I accepted in P3, because it was an attempt at doing something new, and any such attempt has to start somewhere. But while there always will be a divide between what someone like me may want from a game like P4, and what Atlus can actually give us, the truth is that a little more effort in regards to these elements would have, in the end, gone a long way.
Persona 4 is the pinnacle of the Persona series, a journey of 11+ years that has come so far and now shines so bright. For a series that has become so focused on the development of relationships, however, it itself must now develop in what it provides us from those relationships. Otherwise, as good as Persona 4 may be, I'm not sure I can fully support the idea of a Persona 5.
P.S. - Seriously... we need to talk about long, drawn out story sequences before boss battles that cannot in any way be skipped other than mashing a button. When I'm heading in for my fifth attempt at a boss, I don't need to see that anymore. If I've seen a particular sequence once, write a little save file saying that, and just skip it next time. If there was one or more choices involved, ask me if I want to go back and change those choices, and if not, then just go with what I said before.

So, as of last week (the day after Thanksgiving to be exact), my wife, my cat, and myself all got packed up in the car and headed out for a four-day drive to sunny Southern California. Not that the drive required four days, mind you, but I had wanted to give us enough time where (a) we wouldn't feel rushed, and (b) we could have the option to stop and see sights if we had wanted to.
I'm now blogging about my virtual life in a video game instead of my real life. *sigh*
Anyhow, after (virtual in-game) weeks of nobody inviting me out, this week I think every active social contact I have in Persona 3 called me to ask me to hang out on Sunday. And, of course, the first call I got (which I accepted) was from the student who is trying to date his teacher that I'm not all that interested in. (The student... not his teacher. I haven't met his teacher yet.)
I've also decided the girl I was chasing after (Chihiro) bugs me, and the girl I was flirting with on the side (Yuko) is the girl I probably should be going after. Chihiro is cute, and has the glasses thing going for her, but the more I've been hanging out with her, the more I'm not a fan of her attitude. We were studying in the library after school one day, and there were two students at our table who decided to go smooch somewhere. Chihiro totally freaked out about that kind of thing going on at school, and said she was going to bring it up at the next Student Council meeting. (She's the treasurer.) Then, when we were at the mall, this strange guy started messing with her, and I acted a bit tough to make him go away. She freaked out at me a bit for showing a "strong" side.
Meanwhile, I met Yuko at swim team practice, and she's turning out to be a really fun girl. She eats too much, and she knows it, but since she does a lot of swimming she says she can get away with it. She's pretty easy going and not obsessive over things, she showed a devish yet amusing side to her when dealing with a girl at school who doesn't like her, and she's a fan of some sort of sanctioned (or maybe non-sactioned) combat sport. That, or she just enjoys standing around watching when fights break out at school... not too sure yet.
I also found out the semi-crazy girl I met in the MMORPG my character is playing (yes, I'm playing an RPG, and I'm making my in-game character play an MMORPG... the universe is eating itself) is one of the teachers at school. I'm now trying to figure out which one it is.
Got my Valentine's Day gift from my gal today. Card, homemade cookies (plus some to give to my mom), Range Murata Pinkty:st (the exact one I happened to be wanting lately), and an Osaka keychain. Of course, it was all in uber-cute Japanese packaging.
And, that pink paper on top of the clear box? It brings us many words of wisdom, such as: "Other robots have wheels so they can move on their own. These types of robots can help deliver mail in large office buildings."
Airport
Yeah, yeah, I'm totally late. But getting sick, and then having to rush through three games for January deadline has kept me busy. But here I am, ready to go back and talk about my trip to Japan. And, like Tarantino, I'm going to start at the end and then work my way back.
My flight from Japan was on Monday, January 8th at 1pm, set to arrive in Omaha on Monday, January 8th at 5pm. (I know, I can get from Osaka to Omaha in seemingly four hours. Amazing!) I got to the airport, and as always, the line was super long. The good part about KIX, though, is that you get through the line and the initial baggage screening very quickly. The bad part about KIX (or maybe it's just Northwest) is that once you get through that, you're in another line, and not only does that line move far slower, but this time they were doing additional random baggage checks. When I finally got to the front of the line, it was taking FOREVER for my turn to come... and then, boom, I get picked for one of the random screenings.
I get through that, and up to the counter. The nice lady towering above me punches a bunch of keys, looks at things for a while, and then tells me that the flight was overbooked. Great. But, it's okay... my seat is guaranteed. However, if I'm willing to give up my seat, I can catch the 9pm flight out. The new flight would go to Hawaii, have a ten hour layover, then fly to Seattle, then to Minneapolis, and finally to Omaha. Downside, of course, is that huge layover, and the fact that my luggage and I would have to survive three transfers. The good part would be that I'd get to see a bit of Hawaii, a place I've never been, and I'd be given first class all the way to Minneapolis. (The dinky plane from there to Omaha had no first class, so they couldn't offer it.)
Now, I'm not sure if you've ever flown on an international flight or not, but let me give you a little piece of advice: if you do, and you are offered first class (which may also be called Buiness Premium or something like that), TAKE IT. Don't even give it a second though, snatch that ticket and guard it with your life. The difference between coach on a domestic flight and coach on an international flight is mind-baffingly small, and being stuck in that kind of seat for, say, a 14 hour flight, may not exactly give you a replication of what Hell is like, but it's damn close. Business/First class, on the other hand, is a whole new world... a world of wonder and amazement, a world where dreams come true and life could never seem better than it is at that moment.
When sitting down, we were brought champaign. I was given a menu, off of which I could pick what I would be eating. My seat has a massage function, and it could almost completely fully recline, and with the footrest raised, I could lay down and sleep as if I was in a bed. And then, of course, there's the free alcohol.
My only hesitation was having to wait around the airport for so long, and if my gal would be willing to wait for that long. (Not that I thought she wouldn't be, as she'd appreciate the extra time together, but hey, I try to be a nice guy, so I wanted to check with her first.) My host mother and sister had come along, so I ran over to talk to the three of them. As soon as they heard the "first class" part, they told me not to be an idiot and take it.
So, I ended up getting my new tickets, a voucher for a free meal, and - and this I had no idea was coming - a $750 credit with Northwest for any type of flight. Hell, I was just doing it for the first class and the chance to see Hawaii, so that was icing on the cake. The trip, first class aside, was kind of hellish: I ended up spending 40 hours either in an airplane or an airport, I got little sleep on the flight to Hawaii, so I was dead tired when there, and getting on and off of planes after a while loses its charm. But, in the end, it was worth it.

Ah, Hawaii.
To be honest... not all that impressive. Now, to be fair, it was cloudy and rainy while I was there, and I didn't stray too far from the airport, for fear that I'd end up quite far away and something would get screwed up in my getting back to catch my flight. But, you know, when I think Hawaii, I just expect to step off of the plane and have this feeling of magic and wonder in the air, where every way you look is a beach and half-naked girls hula dance on every street corner. To be honest, it felt quite like Southern California.
I sat in the airport for a bit, and then decided that if my chance to go to Hawaii ended up in me sitting in said airport the entire time, I'd be a worthless human being. So, I found a bus to hop, and it just so happened to be going past Pearl Harbor. I figured if I could at least say I saw Pearl Harbor during my trip to Hawaii, then I could consider the trip having been worth it.
Pearl Harbor was interesting. While you're there, you know what the place is, and you have a sense for what happened, but even when you're out there looking at the remains of the ship in the water, it's still a bit hard to fully understand what it all means. I think it hit home the most when it was mentioned that the bodies of many of the soldiers killed are still down there in that watery grave. Even though a youngster like me couldn't fully appreciate the situation, it was still a very powerful and emotional place to visit.
I have to pay taxes this year. WTF. Thankfully, it isn't like I have to pay a lot - I owe $91. But still, I wonder what I screwed up where (or what somebody else screwed up where) to get me into that position.
